Overqualified Unemployed — Graduate in India 2026.
RT VERDICT
Degree alone is a losing bet
SHOULD YOU STILL GO?
Depends on which college + Field
THE ACTUAL MOVE
Degree + Skills, not either/or both
India’s GDP is growing at 8.2%. India also has 67% of its unemployed youth holding degrees. Both facts are true. That contradiction is the story nobody in the college brochure business wants to tell you.
The number that changes everything
Two out of three unemployed young Indians are graduates. Not dropouts. Not unskilled workers. Graduates. The State of Working India 2026 report by Azim Premji University confirmed what many already felt on their skin: a degree is no longer a ticket. For many, it has become an expensive waiting room.

Why the degree stopped working
India created more graduates faster than it created quality jobs. In 2004, only 10% of young people had degrees. By 2023, that number jumped to 28%. The job market did not keep pace. India produces over 1.5 million engineering graduates every year. The economy absorbs a fraction of them into relevant roles. The rest scramble for anything — and call it a career.
Then AI arrived. TCS cut 12,000 jobs in 2025. Entry-level IT roles — the safe harbour that an entire generation of Indian families banked their savings on — are being automated or frozen. The sector that the middle class built its aspirations around is no longer hiring the way it used to. And no one updated the college prospectus.
a B.Tech costs up to ₹34 lakh. The average starting salary is ₹4.74 lakh per year. At that rate, you spend seven years just recovering what you paid to get the job.
The hidden contradiction — why this is structural, not temporary
Postgraduates face higher unemployment than graduates. Graduates face higher unemployment than those with secondary education. The more you study inside a broken system, the worse your odds get. This is not a recession. This is a structural mismatch that has been building for a decade. The syllabi being taught in most Indian colleges were written before ChatGPT existed. Recruiters in 2026 are evaluating candidates on GitHub portfolios, live projects, and certifications from NPTEL, Google, and AWS — not on marks from exams testing knowledge from 2019.
Degree vs. no degree — the real trade-off
| ARGUMENT FOR THE DEGREE | ARGUMENT AGAINST IT |
|---|---|
| Gets you past HR filters — most job portals still require a UGC-recognised degree to apply | ROI is broken at average colleges — ₹34L cost vs ₹4.74 LPA starting salary is a 7-year payback hole |
| Tier-1 colleges still deliver — IIT CSE graduates command ₹20–80 LPA; IIM median placement is ₹34.59 LPA | Tier-2 and below — the gap is brutal — college brand matters more than the degree itself |
| Structured foundation — some fields (medicine, law, civil engineering) legally require a degree; no shortcut exists | Curriculum is outdated — most colleges teach syllabi from 3–5 years ago while industry has already moved on |
| Network and credibility — the hostel batch, alumni network, and campus placements still open doors that LinkedIn alone cannot | Skills close the deal, not the degree — 65% of recruiters now prioritise certifications and live projects over marks |
RT Decision Frame
If you are getting into IIT, IIM, or a top NIT in a high-demand field — GO. The ROI holds. If you are looking at an average private college with a ₹15–30 lakh fee tag and a placement cell that promises the moon, pause hard before signing. The degree will not save you. Your skills will. The 2026 job market has one clear rule: the degree gets you the interview. Skills get you the pay check. If you are already holding a degree and no job — stop waiting for the credential to work. Start building a portfolio, get one industry-recognised certification, and go off-campus. The market rewards proof, not paper.
