Your product/service is awesome and now you are focusing on how to sell, so you decide to do Marketing! and choose the hottest way ‘advertisements’, and then the whole forest is on fire.

I am sure at one point in time your mind must be battling with the answer to the question why am I not getting big sales even after burning money on ads and promotions?

And do you ever wonder when you spend hours trying to launch a product through advertising campaigns, and when you analyze the results got shocked! Why??, my ads didn’t perform according to the amount spent.

You must have seen many miscellaneous things for ads told by YouTubers, bloggers but they mostly talk about content websites, whereas our concern is advertising in online selling, so better to know from a player who is already in online selling, rather than who has only seen far drums.

 ⚠️Because it is important to have a strong product before the advertisements, otherwise I think you are traping the customers.

Let’s check out the major factor that is burning your money in ads, understand them deeply before the fire actually catch the whole forest. it will work like’ precaution before cure’ for those who haven’t used advertisements yet. And a lesson for those who already started.

1. Swimming without learning

Would you like to jump into the ocean without knowing how to swim, if you’re smart, you definitely not!. So, where is your smartness gone when you’re applying the ads for the first time. why you haven’t chosen the long path of “learn then earn”.

Okay, for now, don’t worry it is a regular mistake done by sellers in online selling. Many sellers watch videos, hacks, read short tricks to boost sales in no time and apply it without thinking of effect then after suffering loss they ponder where they were gone wrong.

Remember the time when you doesn’t know anything about online selling but you tried so hard and learned it. so, do you not think that you should try enough practice for learning ads. Believe me, I had seen my sales growth 5x times after I learn to apply correct ads’ and if I can do it you also!.

Self-think this, if you don’t know about algorithms, ACOS, ROAS, ROI, Conversion rate etc. terms in-depth that what is their cause and effects then how you are so confident that your ads will give you as expected results.

Do you know around 90% of the seller doesn’t even know the positive and negative effect of ACOS (advertising cost of sales) on their ads budget and sales?

And then it becomes the biggest stress, I want to ask you why?- why? not in the first place you learned about it then jump into it.

So, in very simple words I want to conclude that every seller should learn the depth of ads first ‘even if you are not responsible for marketing & ads for your brand’ and always start from small test ads then go to complexity level.

The depth of the ocean is so deep that it is only dark when seen from a distance. You can even say that this is an ocean where many successful submarines are sunk, money in commercials burns like wildfire, any wrong decision will take $$$ out of your pocket.

I have no intention of scaring you, even I believe that it is the most powerful tool ever created in business history but it comes with a condition called – “Use me wisely”

2. Ratings

‘Ratings’ mean the stars⭐ you give after the purchase of a product. and ‘Review’ means when you give a product star and also write content/description. it may be with or without images or videos.

Many sellers are ignoring the value and power of Reviews, they count it as a star only but it is much more than a cute golden star. before going in deep just look at this image.

Before rating/review its best selling rank is 0 which means null, no ranking in its category, but just after a single rating by a loyal customer it jumps to 110 ranks in its category, are you still not want to believe in the power of reviews?

Let us understand this with an example – suppose you have launched a new product and started a campaign, and implemented all the strategies, then after the results, you will see that they are not as per your expectations.

Then you will be bothered to detect leaks. But in reality, the leak is already there. An advertisement is just an algorithm that showcases your product along with existing top products but still, customers are hesitant to buy it.

Why? Yes! Because they see that there are no reviews/ratings which means they can’t get an idea from the actual customer who has bought that product to understand how the product is actually.

3. Uncommon faults

Wrong analysis

Do you know the performance of ads we track on the dashboard is not exactly ‘live & accurate’ they all are an estimation? Many people think the current performance data is accurate and that’s where wrong analysis started, although data calculation works accurately through technology but in ads conversion, ACOS, ROAS, ROI like things matter which can’t be calculated currently because you can’t.

Understand it by an example. a customer on amazon clicked on your ad but didn’t order, then he came after some time, click and this time he adds it to the cart but didn’t purchase, and in the third time he again repeat the click process and make a purchase, now, in this case, your click will count 3.

But the conversion rate and other factors need time to analyze properly that either a buyer actually bought it or not, all I want to say is that dashboard data is accurate but it delays in showing proper reports, so if you use ads always remark date and time of that campaign and check it after at least 48hrs for accurate results.

Wrong budget

Who can predict the future nobody! but for the sake of god don’t apply this thinking in advertisements. Budgeting is a real thing for which the future can be predicted, you can estimate the right budget and work on it confidently, like in childhood when mom used to give you a budget to buy groceries and You used to come back with the right stuff according to the budget.

So, what changed now only your thinking! isn’t it? in online selling, we repeat the mistakes like overbudgeting and underbudgeting. but the only thing that will bring perfection in budgeting is the “hit and trial method”. ​Hit the budget amount as many times until it perfectly starts giving you results, just keep 1 thing in mind ( start from a small amount and wait for at least 48 hrs for results)

Wrong display

Suppose you go to your favourite retail outlet to buy shoes, but you see that they have removed all the showcases which used to display the new variety, all the boxes of shoes are without branding, images, content, no one is there to welcome you. you liked a shoe but that doesn’t fit your size and you see there is no other size of that shoe, you walk out frustrated and say “I think I landed in the wrong outlet”.

If you read the above thing you will surely estimate that how much that customer went frustrated and he will not go to that outlets again, so similarly in online selling customer came to see your product in his screen, he is expecting correct images, display, good content of the description, bullet points, true size charts, model sample, customer reviews and all things that give 5 stars to your display which make customer experience awesome even if he doesn’t buy that and I want to tell you a hidden secret, that marketplaces push that product up whose display is best because the customer experience is there priority.

But many sellers fail to manage it, even I saw listings with no description, few bullet points, no reviews, bad images and still they using heavy advertisements and pondering why not getting sales! 😁

Low research

Well here I am assuming you have everything fine, good product and good performance and also good advertisements, but still, sales are low. So, one thing that is eating up your money here is your low effort research on the product and its keywords.

One thing even pro sellers get lazy about is updating keywords over time, finding new keywords that trend. Good research can save you from fire but we put it last, whereas it should be before placing an ad.

Stoped checking

I want to highlight this as the biggest reason for burning money because many smart people learn ads deeply and understand fair use but still miss here.

When you forget to timely check your ads’ prominent performance, you may not identify the hidden leaks that are secretly eating your budget. for eg. you run a campaign and check it on time.

And you found that the campaign is out of budget before the expected time, so you delve deeper and find that a keyword is solely responsible for eating 40% of the ad budget then you either lower its bid or remove him. So, always keep an eye on the movement of the ads and keywords used.

Wrong Targeting

Are you also from those who try to sell everyone, or think all customers are the same? Man! you got the wrong idea, every customer is different, they are only separated by type and interests like age, gender etc.

So, you created a campaign that is to target everyone, what do you think that computer has a mind of its own who will identify whom to display your ads or whom to not without your command.

Ads algorithms are strong as they go towards an artificial intelligence technology but if your target customer is not specific this technology is also wasteful in your case. so, first decide your target customer, whom you really want to sell. Then only use advertisements.


4. Cold Hold

Wondering what “cold-hold” is, I like to use the term to say “unable to handle“.

When someone is unable to handle something properly, I say ‘you cold hold’. (use it as funny slang, not to offend someone)

The term cold-hold fits perfectly on those who are not ready to handle the impact of advertisements.

Even if it is positive like you started a campaign and got amazing sales, if you are unable to handle it properly, i.e. delay in shipping, packaging etc., then it is not only a waste of your advertising money but also Your business image.

Many sellers succeed in getting leads or sales from ads but suddenly in a huge amount that they haven’t thought or pre-prepared for so, they lack in customer replies, queries, late shipping, follow up and customer care.

This lead to leaving a bad impression in the mind of the customer and once the customer mindset changed toward your brand, then it doesn’t matter how much you spend.

I saw an amazon case, where a seller got huge sales through ads on one of his listings, but he hasn’t expected that much of a jump in sales so, he failed to manage stock thus dispatching all products late.

And then amazon performance Metrix rise his late dispatch rate by 35% (seller have to maintain below 2% in amazon) and you know the next thing! amazon suspended his account, lost customer satisfaction, stuck money for 90days, returns, etc. losses.

In online selling things change rapidly, So don’t be a cold hold. if you are unable or not ready to handle the impact of ads, just be patient and wait for the right movement.

5. No brand awareness

Someone from Amazon once told me that, sellers think that advertisement is a tool which uses will give them rain of money but the truth is advertisements are invented for the purpose of spreading awareness.

It is so true, that we all think we will launch a product using ads and it will sell and we get annoyed when it does not sell. Remember sales are the by-product of ads, the true power of ads for which we use them is to spread awareness.

And if you had not spread your brand awareness by spending dollars on advertisements. Congratulations👏 you burned🔥 money💰!

Someone here will surely think that he earned profit from the product sold through ads, and her product and its packaging is itself a brand awareness to the buyer. Okay, I agree but ask yourself how focused you observe packaging while unboxing your ordered product. Definitely not much!.

So in simple words focus more on brand awareness through ads, rather than on selling of product. You know this thing self that if once your brand is established you don’t, require to burn money on ads daily.

What I am trying to say is

When I started my journey I never applied for any advertisement in 2 years. But when I used ads for the first time I got ‘No profit no loss sales’.

I repeated the above mistakes a lot of times and even when I took a legitimate course on “How to Advertise” for several weeks and learned a lot.

But still, the results were not as expected. But after some time my performance magically increased, I started getting good ROI, ACOS, ROAS, Sales etc.
